The First Family

I booked a family in late February for a session that wouldn’t happen until the end of May. I was super excited for two reasons. One I hadn’t had a family job since the fall and had started to have imposter syndrome about my family work. Two this family was “kids and dogs.”

I personally loved working with all the families but I had never experienced a “slow winter season” because it had been my first ever family photo season. I later realized that winter tends to be a time that is pretty slow for family photography. I have some ideas for this year to keep potential bookings coming in in the winter, I’ll let you all know how that works for me next year!

I had an “almost dogs” session in 2020 but at the last minute the people decided against bringing their dogs. I thought about the fun and the challenges of photographing people and their four legged best-friends. By doing so practice on dogs I decided to add a little up-charge to my sessions to cover the extra editing and actually shots I have to take in order to get the dog’s looking at the camera.

Needless to say before this shoot I was a little clueless. I was so excited though.

We had a rainy day and I worried about postponing the session because of the rain. the clients loved the idea of shooting even in the rain because they really wanted something untraditional for the mantle.

I personally love how all of their sessions photos turned out. The lighting turned out to be wonderful, the park was practically glistening from the rain, and the kids were in great spirits even though it was muddy and the dogs were really excited and wild.

I never heard back from this family. I’m not even sure if they downloaded their photos. I hope they loved them, and I hope they printed one for “above their mantle”. I loved this session, and these kids were great sports. Their’s is a blended family and I had them laughing and hugging.

Their interactions were authentic and sweet and I was pretty proud of my ability to catch the dogs looking or almost looking in several shots.

  1. I love these pictures! I can’t believe the family didn’t acknowledge them. It looks like a fun and memorable day.
